The Year that Proved the Value of Creativity
Days Left to Donate in 2020
Despite the twists and turns of 2020, KID smART remains more committed than ever to arts-rich learning. Read on to see where we’ve been, where we are, and where the road can take us when our creativity meets your generosity and support. We hope you’ll continue this journey with us!
Business as Usual: KID smART partners teaching artists and classroom teachers, serving 2,000 students across 11 New Orleans public schools with arts-integrated instruction.
In January, KID smART starts an innovative partnership with the Harvard Graduate School of Education through Reach Every Reader, a virtual reality teacher training platform. Little did we know, all teacher training would be moving online in a matter of months.
KID smART Goes Virtual: New Orleans schools shut down in-person instruction and classes shift online. KID smART artists continue to co-plan and co-teach arts-integrated lessons virtually and workshops for classroom teachers move online.
KID smART launches the Art Apart video series. This arts-based lesson library grows to more than 90 videos, and is viewed more than 5,000 times by people around the world. Artists retain full employment and salaries.
Combating Summer Slide: KID smART provides virtual literacy integration support and materials to over 500 children at 16 summer camps in partnership with the New Orleans Campaign for Grade Level Reading and United Way of Southeast Louisiana. This collaboration embeds literacy strategies and combats summer slide, especially crucial with the premature end of the school year.
The Road Ahead: You can help us continue this vital work in 2021 and beyond! Teaching artists are once again integrating the arts into classrooms in 11 schools across New Orleans. Whether the format is virtual, in-person, or a hybrid of both, your gift to KID smART keeps students engaged in learning and helps them come up with their own creative responses to this unique moment in time.
