The work of Gulf Coast artists Walter Anderson and Francis Pavy will inspire us on our exploration of the wildlife, plants, animals, and ecosystems of the Gulf Coast through drawing and printmaking. “But I can’t draw,” you say? Teachers will learn step by step how to confidently teach their students to draw from observation (of photographs), focusing on the big shapes and movements while adding in details, pattern, and texture. We will focus on empowering our students to draw loosely, slow down, observe, notice and not try to get it “right.”
We will then use those drawings to learn about printmaking and create relief prints. Teachers will learn how to create an easy, efficient printmaking studio in their classroom. Students will learn all about printmaking, exploring the use of color, line, texture, pattern, and layering. Students will create prints as they research and write about the animal or plant that they created.
