Young children communicate with their bodies and faces, yet often we discourage this natural physical language. Learn to engage students in reading comprehension through the art form of pantomime. Provide opportunities for all learners to be active participants in read-aloud as they pantomime what they envision about character actions, emotions and key details. Teach basic theater vocabulary, give clear instructions, and ask open-ended questions the whole class can respond to. As they pantomime their connections to the story, they will learn more from each other, and teach you even more about themselves.
