Exploring Empathy through Persona Poetry

In this workshop, teachers will learn how poetry can teach students to 1) build understanding for a historical moment, and 2) develop empathy for historical figures whose life experiences and backgrounds are different from their own. Participants will learn about New Orleans history by closely examining primary source documents, such as photographs and newspaper articles. They will then compose persona poems in the voice of a historical figure. Participants will leave this workshop with tools to teach their students how to approach another point of view with an open mind and a willingness to bend and stretch their thinking.
